मोहम्मद रफ़ी के साथ 1965 में की ऊषा तिमोथी ने अपने गायन की शुरुआत

ऊषा तिमोथी बॉलीवुड की चर्चित पार्श्व-गायिका रहीं हैं। उन्होंने अपने करियर का प्रारंभ मनोज कुमार व माला सिन्हा की फ़िल्म ‘हिमालय की गोद में’ भारत के महान गायक मोहम्मद रफ़ी के साथ गीत गा कर किया था। उस फ़िल्म में संगीत कल्याणजी आनन्दजी ने दिया था। एक दावे के अनुसार वह हिन्दी, पंजाबी, मल्यालम, भोजपुरी व मराठी भाषाओं में 5,000 से अधिक गा चुकी हैं।

श्रीमति ऊषा तिमोथी का जन्म 1948 में महाराष्ट्र राज्य के नगर नागपुर के एक मसीही परिवार में हुआ था। उनके पिता सीबीआई में कार्यरत थे। वह अपने 11 भाई-बहनों में से सब से छोटी थीं। उनके बड़े भाई मधुसूदन तिमोथी को संगीत से बहुत अधिक लगाव था वह अपने घर पर ही संगीतमय जलसे सजाया करते थे। ऊषा तिमोथी ने संगीत पण्डित लक्ष्मण प्रसाद से सीखना प्रारंभ किया। उन्होंने सुश्री निर्मला देवी से टप्पे व ठुमरी गायन भी सीखा।

कल्याणजी आनन्दजी की खोज हैं ऊषा तिमोथी

श्रीमति ऊषा तिमोथी की खोज वास्तव में कल्याणजी आनन्दजी ने 1956-57 में कर ली थी। तब इस संगीतकार जोड़ी का एक शो था, जिसमें मोहम्मद रफ़ी, मुकेश, मन्ना डे, हेमन्त कुमार जैसे गायक उस में गा रहे थे परन्तु तब कोई गायिका वहां पर नहीं थी। तभी ऊषा जी को गाने का सुअवसर प्राप्त हुआ और अपनी उस परफ़ार्मेंस से वह छा गईं।

श्रीमति ऊषा तिमोथी ने अपने समय के सभी गायकों जैसे मोहम्मद रफ़ी, किशोर कुमार, मुकेश सभी के साथ फ़िल्मी गीत गाए हैं। परन्तु मोहम्मद रफ़ी उनकी पहली पसन्द हैं। वह बहुत ही शांत स्वभाव की हैं और उनकी आवाज़ में लता मंगेशकर जैसी मिठास व आशा भोंसले जैसी शोख़ी है।

Usha Timothy ji is one of the most talented playback singers of Bollywood. A renowned Music Director Pandit Shivram gave her first break in 1962. Thus, she sang a Sanskrit Shloka of 60 lines for Producer-Director Adarsh’s film ‘Durga Puja’. Then she was only 13.

Her career’s second song became a big hit in 1964. The film was ‘Himalaya Ki Goad Main’ and she sang with Mohd. Rafi “Tu Raat Khadi Thi Chhat Pe” under the direction of Kalyanji-Anandji.

Usha Timothy was born in a prestigious Christian family of Nagpur (Maharashtra). Her father was a CBI Officer. Usha ji says,"My family always had a strong inclination towards music. My elder brother Madhusudan Timothy is a well known violinist of All India Radio and my cousin Vasant Timothy used to teach music at the Khairagarh University in MP. Vasant was a famous violinist. In such an environment my inclination towards music was but natural. I used to love listening the songs of Rafi sahib and Lata ji from childhood on the radio."

At the age of 11, Usha ji began taking formal training in music. She started her training in classical vocal from Pt Lakshman Prasad of Jaipur. She also started learning Tappas and Thumris from Nirmala Devi too. While in conversation with Shishir Krihan Sharma, Usha Timothy ji told that she also learnt classical singing from Pt Shivram when she got a chance to sing the shlokas for Durga Pooja. Usha ji says that Rafi sahab was her guru (teacher) in the field of Playback singing. He taught her breath control and also to understand emotions behind songs, singing them with bringing elements of acting. Rafi sahab believed that a good playback singer must act while giving playback.
